1) A 1950's Refresher: Two Films
On June 10th: The Atomic Cafe: This film, a dark comedy, recounts cold-war paranoia in the U.S. through a collage of newsreel footage, government archives, military training films, and fifties music. The film captures a panicked nation when fall-out shelters, duck-and-cover drills, and government propaganda were all part of our social consciousness.
On June 17th: Heir to an Execution: A Granddaughter's Story. In the early 1950s, Senator Joe McCarthy's red scare propaganda had a stranglehold on America. Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed at the peak of political hysteria. But a true reflexion of the Rosenbergs never surfaced during this volatile period. Fifty years later, Ivy Meeropol, the Rosenbergs' granddaughter, documents her quest to find the true Rosenbergs in the light of newly-released information from the infamous trial.

4) Burro Homestead
Isabella and Robert Ferguson moved to Silver City in 1910, seeking health for Robert's lungs. Isabella had known Teddy Roosevelt when he had sought his own cure in the Dakotas and Robert had served with Teddy in Cuba. Isabella was a bridesmaid for Eleanor Roosevelt. In fact, the Fergusons and Roosevelts traveled together on FDR's and Eleanor's honeymoon, and later the Roosevelts were stranded in a sandstorm north of Deming when they came for a visit. In 1913 the Fergusons filed for a homestead in the Burros and built a lodge that reminded Robert of the Scottish hunting lodges of his boyhood. (Robert's ancestors were Scottish lords.) Isabella, who later built the Arizona Inn in Tucson, modeled it after the Burro Mountain Homestead. The engaging story of a torrid love affair, rich husbands who died, and a term as a congresswoman follows. Class members will learn the details in a late afternoon class led by Tom Hester and then the next morning travel in a caravan to the Homestead. Lou Osmer, an 86-year-old raconteur who lived in the Homestead in the 1950's as a caretaker, will be our guide.

5) History of Libya
Libya has a very long and tumultuous history. We have records of the Berbers in Libya in 5,000 BC. Berber pharaohs ruled Egypt for two dynasties. Libya was the breadbasket for both Greeks and Romans and the remains of both civilizations are still to be found in Libya today. One of the major Jewish revolts against the Romans took place in Libya, in the same area as the 2011 revolt against Gaddafi and some of the major battles of WWII.

10) Tour of Chile Institute
The epicenter of international chiledom, that fiery kingdom which includes both the mild jalepeno and the scorching habanero, is the Chile Institute at New Mexico State University. The institute has developed new varieties of chiles for New Mexico growers, and among its many services is a demonstration garden that includes all the basic types of chiles (except the single type that grows only in the tropics).
WILL-ites will journey to the gardens located between Las Cruces and Mesilla and will enjoy a tour while a guide shares lore and hot, hot facts about New Mexico's favorite fruit. Wear head gear, slather on sun block, and take a water bottle because you'll have to walk across a plowed field in the baking Cruces sol. (We've visited the institute twice in the past and participants were unanimously wild about the tour.)
Afterwards, if you like, you can join the tour at Peppers, on the Mesilla plaza, and dine on chiles rellenos (or any other plato). Since this is a WILL tour, no beers or margaritas permitted. We'll be back in Silver City before 3:00pm.
