The Pinhole Photography presentation by Nancy Spencer and Eric Renner on April 25 was part of the ongoing Artists Lecture Series, free and open to the public. It was sponsored by three local organizations in Silver City: WILL, the Mimbres Regional Arts Council, and the WNMU Expressive Arts Department. Approximately 40 people enjoyed the presentation.

The presenters explained pinhole photography by showing various pinhole cameras and a plethora of exceptional images from all over the world. Some of those images are portrayed here. In a nutshell, pinhole photography is done without a lens. A tiny hole replaces the lens, allowing light to pass through this hole and strike film or photo paper at the back of the pinhole camera. The results are very different from conventional lens photography, and produce striking images, some of which cannot be produced with a lens.

Nancy Spencer and Eric Renner, the featured artists for this presentation, are world famous. They live right here in Mimbres and are familiar to Silver City artisans. Both Nancy and Eric have been instrumental in fostering pinhole photography as a contemporary art form. Their presentation featured pinhole photography through the ages - literally! Pinhole technique can be found in literature as early as Fifth Century B.C. It appears throughout world history in both science and art, was used by well-known artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Albrecht Durer, and was applied at the Vatican to validate the Gregorian calendar. Pinhole flourishes in contemporary science and art.

A variety of cameras and techniques through time have produced an incredible spectrum of artistic results. The evolution of pinhole photography takes on some of the same fascination as the history of flying machines - all kinds of contraptions that came to the table were given a chance, with a wild array of results.

Several WILL members who wanted to extend their knowledge and appreciation of this art form traveled to Nancy's and Eric's home with a follow-up WILL class. You just can't find a better set of teachers than Nancy and Eric. The Pinhole Resource, www.pinholeresource.com, an international information center and archive for pinhole photography, was founded by Eric Renner in 1984, and his comprehensive book on the subject, Pinhole Photography: From Historic Technique to Digital Application, is the definitive work on this subject.
